Give Your Assailant the Sting- The History of Pepper Spray

At Troubledoom headquarters the evildoers are plotting to get the upper hand on the ladies known as the “Pink Pretties”. The dastardly villains have mistaken their female counterparts as docile, timid and tame. On the contrary these super women are smart, powerful and always 3 steps ahead. The misfits don’t stand a chance when the ladies discover the history of pepper spray and use it to turn up the heat against their assailants.

Being a woman does not mean being weak or powerless. Taking a few preventative measures such as
  • Being aware of your surroundings
  • 2) Assessing the degree of the threat and
  • Using the buddy system when possible might be enough to ward off your attacker.
However if confrontation cannot be avoided, applying the heat from pepper spray is just the thing to buy you some time until help arrives.

We know that peppers are a flavorful food but how do you turn food into a weapon? The process begins with the pepper spray or oleoresin capsicum (OC) coming from the fruit of plants found in the Capsicum family.  The capsicum is ground into a fine powder and extracted using an organic solvent such as ethanol. After the solvent evaporates, the remaining residual is a waxy substance, oleoresin capsicum. When sprayed in the face, the capsicum spray causes the eyes to sting and tear up.

A popular element of self-defense, red chili powder was used in ancient China, India and various other parts of the world as a weapon of torture for slaves and criminals. Warriors preferred it because of the powder's ability to temporarily incapacitate their enemy. As time evolved, scientists continued to experiment trying to create a product that was easily stored and accessible in spray or gas form.

By the 1980’s pepper spray was complete and accepted as a legalized non-lethal weapon. Today pepper spray controls riots, a policing agent by law enforcement, protection against dogs by postal workers, protection against bear attacks by hunters and a personal weapon for women.

So let the miscreants plot, you have your secret weapon and know how to use it. You’re smart, savvy and powerful. Taking the necessary precaution to ensure your safety will always keep you 3 steps ahead and give your assailant the sting.

How the Warning Zap of a Stun Gun can Deter an Attacker

Even skilled martial artists agree it is better to deter an attacker than to use force. As such, carrying a stun gun is one of the best ways to prevent an attack, because the warning zap of a stun gun is often enough to scare off even the most diligent assailant.

Stun guns work by releasing high-voltage electricity into a person’s skin to temporarily disable the nerves and allow you time to escape. The shock from these guns is known to be incredibly painful, and is something most attackers would prefer to avoid. In some cases, simply showing a stun gun to an attacker is enough to send him or her packing.

If revealing a stun gun becomes ineffective, giving a warning zap shows you are serious about using your weapon, and can cause an assailant to begin rethinking his or her motives. Producing a warning zap will result in flashes of light, followed by a sizzling sound similar to that of someone being shocked. The combination of visual and sound effects leaves no room for doubt as to the effects of a stun gun. The odds of someone retreating after hearing a warning zap are extremely high because of that.

Stun guns are even more effective when they are cleverly concealed, as they provide you with an element of surprise that can give you the upper hand during an intense situation. For this reason, our stun guns that also look like flashlights or lipstick cases are extremely popular, especially among women.

12 Pepper Spray Facts

www.pinkdefenseweapons.com

  1. Women, when looking for a personal protection product and being unwilling to carry a firearm, often choose pepper spray to grant that special edge over an often larger, stronger male attacker.
  2. The reasons are its immediate and persistent effects that can incapacitate an attacker and its ease of use.
  3. Pepper spray is a favorite form of nonlethal defense for law enforcement agencies.
  4. Pepper spray canisters can also look fashionable, since a woman needs to be able to properly accessorize while protecting herself. They come in a variety of colors (including pink) and one can also purchase an attractive holster to go along with it.
  5. HowStuffWorks reports that the essential ingredient of pepper spray is an extract of chili peppers in an aerosol can.
  6. It can come in the form of a can that looks like a pepper spray can or in something innocuous looking like lipstick.
  7. The woman being attacked will spray her attacker directly in the face to get the maximum effect.
  8. The immediate effect of pepper spray is an intense, burning sensation.
  9. To imagine what it feels like, think of how one’s mouth feels when biting down on a chili pepper and then magnify it by 10 or even 100, depending on the amount of pepper spray used and its potency.
  10. The painful, burning sensation lasts for several seconds, long enough for a woman to get away to safety and to call law enforcement.
  11. One persistent effect can be the temporary blinding of the attacker that can last up to 30 minutes.
  12. A woman considering buying pepper spray should make herself aware of state and local laws concerning its purchase and use. Some states and localities have an age limit for the purchase of pepper spray. Others restrict where it can be carried for use. It goes without saying that one cannot take a pepper spray canister onto an airliner. With these legal matters taken into consideration, pepper spray remains a great option for personal defense.

3 Things You Should Know About Campus Safety

As a student, or parent of a student, getting ready for college, there are a lot of things to be concerned about. It's not easy to transition from living with your parents and going to high school into living in a dorm at college. Campus safety is a major concern for families, as well it should be. According to all the headlines reporting about campus crime and lists of the most dangerous campuses, it's a downright dangerous place to be. However, there are three things that you should know about college safety that will set your mind at ease.

1. The Numbers Are Skewed
Every time you see a statistic, keep in mind that the numbers are determined by a person or group that has a narrow view of the situation. In other words, they are looking for a specific result, and they are able to find it. Consider how many articles you've seen about the most dangerous college campuses. Ever wonder why one college will be listed as the most dangerous on one list, but further down the line on another? It's this skewed view of the numbers that creates the disparity. That's not to say that there are not some issues with safety on college campuses, but it does mean you should take whatever you read with a grain of salt.

2. Armed Police Presence
With growing concern over campus safety, it's no surprise that campuses across the country are stepping up efforts to keep students safe. According to one report, over a third of colleges and universities with at least 2,500 students use police officers for their security services. These officers have full arrest powers, the same as their non-campus counterparts. What's more, just about all of the sworn campus police officers are armed and are authorized to use their weapon, a chemical spray or their baton, if necessary. Some campuses also rely on a staff of unsworn security officers either in conjunction with, or in place of sworn police.

3. Prevention Is Key
There are many things that students can do to assure their own safety on campus. Things like avoiding dark pathways, using the buddy system and being aware of your surroundings are all common-sense approaches. Using a lock on the dorm room and putting valuables in locked areas, out of sight are two ways to deter theft. Another thing that students can do is to take a personal defense class to learn how to defend against attack. It is also a good idea to carry pepper spray, a stun gun, or some other personal protection device, especially when walking alone at night.
The truth is, there is no guarantee that anyone will be safe at any time. However, that doesn't mean you have to accept an attack or robbery as inevitable. Contact us to learn more about how to protect yourself, or your college student, on campus. We'll be happy to answer any questions you have.
